LST-Md™ shale stabilizer is a suspension of the SOLTEX® additive in a performance-enhancing liquid mixture.
The LST-Md suspension offers all the well-known shale stabilizing and HPHT filtrate control advantages of a dry pre-solubilized product. At the same time, it significantly enhances lubricity while having minimal impact on the rheological properties of the drilling fluid. The LST-Md liquid phase is completely biodegradable with bioassay tests in Generic Mud #7 indicating LC50 values of >1,000,000.
LST-Md shale stabilizer should be added to water-based drilling fluids when drilling troublesome shale intervals. It acts to seal micro-fractures in the shale and plaster the wellbore with a tough, thin, slick and flexible coating that protects the shale from invasion by, and reaction with, the water portion of the drilling fluid. The stabilizer’s liquid phase also prevents the shale cuttings from becoming dispersed in the drilling fluid system before removal by the solids control equipment. Because of its enhanced lubricity properties, the product is especially recommended when drilling shale intervals in deviated holes.
LST-Md shale stabilizer should be added to the drilling fluid system at a concentration of 2-3% by volume. It may be added through the hopper or directly to the active system, preferably near a pit agitator.
