NewPhalt™ shale stabilizer is a modified sulfonated asphalt for use in both water and invert emulsion drilling fluids. It is environmentally friendly and employs chemical and physical mechanisms to control sloughing shale. The exceptional water solubility of the product enhances its capacity to provide shale control, while its insoluble component delivers physical wellbore plugging characteristics. NewPhalt shale stabilizer also reduces filtrate and enhances filter cake deposition.
- Provides highly effective stabilization and control of reactive and/or sloughing shale
- Delivers superior API and HPHT filtrate control
- Reduces torque and drag and the friction coefficient of water-based drilling fluids
- Enhances filter cake quality (thin and tough)
- Exceeds all LC50 environmental requirements
- Requires no emulsifiers or coupling agents
NewPhalt shale stabilizer can be added to any water or invert emulsion drilling fluid system to stabilize zones of reactive and/or sloughing shale.
NewPhalt shale stabilizer may be added to any water or invert emulsion system in concentrations of 2-8 lb/bbl, depending upon conditions. As a preventative treatment, or to achieve initial fluid loss control, 2-4 lb/bbl is recommended. For controlling severe sloughing shale sections, 4-8 lb/bbl is recommended. The product may be added directly to the system via the hopper.
