Space shuttle Endeavour -- five stories high, 170,000 pounds, 78-foot wingspan -- was recently moved from the Los Angeles, California airport to the California Science Center. Moving Endeavour over city streets on a remote-controlled platform was challenging enough for engineers, but when it came to moving the shuttle across a large field at the end of its journey at Exposition Park, how did they keep it from sinking into and damaging the soft ground? The answer: 900 of Newpark’s DURA-BASE® mats to provide a smooth and stable road for the shuttle and support its weight. Southern California Public Radio conducted an in-depth interview about the project with Newpark Sales Representative Nate Rehm. Click on the “Listen Now” link to hear the interview.
